Wado-Ryu's Style
"Ryu" meaning school or style, "Wa" meaning peace and "Do" the way, we could translate our method Wado-Ryu by the school of the way to the Peace.
One of its specificity, is that it has been created by master Hironori Othsuka, whom was a master and heir of a Ju-Jutsu method before learning the Karate Do, thus Wado Ryu is a quite complete martial art.
Karate Do, means "the way of the art of fighting with empty hands", i.e. without arms (Kara : Empty; Te : Hand; Do : Way). Knowing that there was a previous sense, depending of the translation rule used to read these ideograms : (Kara : China; Té : Hand). In fact it was done intentionaly to mislaid readers, the Karate coming from the Okinawaian islands, between Japan and China. In addition to the standard karate technics, self denfenses technics against knifes are practised (Tanto Tori), as well as armlocks (Kihon Kumite), and followup on the ground (Itori).
This style is one of the four major karate styles, that are Shotokan, Shito-Ryu, Goju-Ryu and Wado-Ryu. One can notice and underline that the usage of dodges, sidestepping, and the speed of execution are the main characteristics of this style compare to the others.
P.S.: The closest style to the Wado-Ryu is the shotokan, indeed this can be easely explained by the fact that Hironori Othsuka learned the Karate with Gishin Funakoshi (himself creator of the Shotokan). One could almost dare to say that Wado Ryu is "closest" to original Shotokan than the actual Shotokan more inspired by Gishin's son (Oshitaka), distincted by very low positions and being less dynamic and more static, a large number of pictures illustrate this.
